Tamarin stays deep when other lagoons go shallow.
That’s it. That’s why you come here.
Low tide at Le Morne? Almost impossible. You’re stuck on the beach. Low tide at Tamarin? Walk in 10 more meters. You’re riding. The bay goes deep. At low tide, just wade out a bit farther. At high tide, you’re flying from the shore.
This is the most reliable spot on the West Coast.

- Public toilets (clean enough)
- Changing area (basic but it works)

The Safe Riding Zone
The Main Bay:
This is your playground. Wide. Deep. Space for everyone.
Stay in the center and you’re golden. No reef from the main beach. The Rivière du Rempart flows into the ocean here. Clean, open water.
Watch the left side. That’s where boats anchor and surfers cluster. Hidden rocks. Sometimes knee-deep coral. Stay clear.
The right side? Open. You’ve got room to carve, room to practice, room to mess up without consequence.
For Beginners:
Stick to the middle third of the bay. Flat water. Predictable depth. No surprises.
For Intermediates:
The whole bay is yours. Practice your carves. Work on speed. Get comfortable.
Black Stone (Right Side):
When you enter the ocean, look right. In front of Tamarina Hotel.
When there’s swell, you get clean, rolling waves. Not huge. Not gnarly. Just fun, safe wave riding for eFoils.
This is where you learn to ride waves without the risk.
Tours (Advanced Only):
- South: Toward La Balise Marina (6km)
- North: Toward Flic en Flac (7.5km)
Warning: Never solo on tours. If your motor quits or battery dies outside the bay, the current will take you. Always bring a buddy. Non-negotiable.
The Rule:
You have a motor. Surfers and swimmers don’t. Stay clear. Give them 20+ meters. They have right of way. Always.
Conditions & Hazards
Depth: Deep. The bay drops off fast. At low tide, walk in 10-20 meters and you’ve got plenty of clearance. At high tide, you’re in deep water immediately.
Tides: All tides work. That’s the point. Low tide means a slightly longer walk. High tide means you’re deep from the start. Either way, you ride.
Wind (general rule of thumb):
- Best: Early morning (6-9am). Glass. No wind. Perfect.
- Good: Late afternoon (4-6pm). Light wind. Still rideable.
- Avoid: Midday (11am-2pm). Wind picks up. Choppier.
Current: Mild inside the bay. Stronger outside. Stay in the bay unless you’re experienced.
Boat Traffic: Low. A few fishing boats. Tourist boats. Sometimes a water ski boat. Easy to see. Easy to avoid.
What Makes This Spot Special
The Dolphins:
Tamarin is famous for them. Early morning, you’ll see pods.
Here’s the deal: Don’t chase them.
The eFoil is silent. That’s beautiful. Use it right. Slow down when you see them. Stay 50+ meters back. Watch them cruise. It’s a privilege to share the water.
If there are tourist boats and catamarans around, don’t cross wild between them. Navigate around. Stay predictable.
If you chase, you’re the problem.
The Consistency:
Other spots need perfect conditions. Tamarin works 300+ days a year. That’s why I ride here. That’s why you should too.
The Vibe:
Chill. Not crowded. Mix of locals and visitors. Everyone shares the space. Respectful crew.
Post-Session
Rinse Off:
Freshwater showers at the beach. Rinse yourself. Rinse the salt off your skin.
Food:
Street Food (My Pick):
Small huts on the beach next to the road. Only open at midday.
- Fried noodles from MUR 100
Cheap. Delicious. Authentic.
Eat where the locals eat.

Street food at Tamarin. Fried noodles, boulettes, boiled noodles. Where locals eat. Where you should too.
Sit-Down Option:
Veranda Tamarin - Right on the beach. Cold beer. Proper lunch or dinner. Good seafood.
Price: MUR 500-800 per person.
Worth it if you want the full beach restaurant experience.
Before You Go
Safety:
Never ride tours alone. Check the tide. Check the wind. Check your battery level.
If you’re unsure, stay in the bay.
Respect:
Surfers, swimmers, dolphins, other riders. You’re the one with the motor. Act like it.
Give space. Share the water. Keep it clean.
